Your Excellency, Mr.MENANDRO, and Mrs. MENANDRO,
Distinguished Ambassadors and Members of the Diplomatic Missions in Israel, Honored Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen!

Today, exactly 200 years ago, Prince Pedro stood on the Ipiranga riverbank, and expressed the deep desire for freedom: Independência
ou Morte.
עצמאות או מוות
That was the famous Grito do Ipiranga –
זעקת איפיראנגה

The independence of the nation of Brazil has begun.

I am very pleased and honored to represent the government and the people of Israel in congratulating the government and the people of the Federative Republic of Brazil, on the occasion of this very special national day – celebrating 200 years of independence. Brazil and Israel have enjoyed a long history of close relations with an ever growing affinity between the people of both countries. to put it simply, I would say: We love Brazil!
אנחנו אוהבים את ברזיל
Nós amamos o Brasil

This relationship found its roots in that historic UN vote on the 29th of November 1947. There is no Israeli who isn't moved when they hear the recording of the President of the UN General Assembly, Osvaldo Arania, Brazilian of course, declaring the establishment of the Jewish State. That was made possible after Arania had been working diligently behind the scenes to guarantee a majority vote. .

Brazil is the home of one of the biggest Jewish communities in the world, including my own family, that like many other Jews, found refuge in Brazil after the Shoah.

Over the past years, the relations between our two countries have reached new heights. We share cooperation in a number of different areas, including agriculture, tourism, security, cyber, space, health, innovation, water management and more. Economic relations have also developed and with them, trade has grown considerably. On this point, we would also like to express our appreciation for Brazil having established a trade office in Jerusalem.
.
In the political arena, many delegations from both sides have exchanged visits, and even our national leaders have visited each other's countries. Israel's previous Prime Minister paid a visit in 2018 and Brazil’s President came to Israel the following year. The State of Israel would like to thank the government and the people of Brazil for the friendship they show towards Israel. The political support in multilateral forums, such as demonstrated by their votes at the U.N. There are many examples and expressions of support and friendship for which we are deeply appreciative.

This year, both of our countries will have national elections. Brazil in October and Israel in November. I am sure that regardless of the outcome in both countries, the relations between the governments and the peoples of both nations will continue to grow and flourish.

Your Excellency Mr. Ambassador, I ask that you please convey the warm wishes of the Israeli government and the Israeli people to the government and the people of Brazil. We wish you a future of peace, stability and economic prosperity. As for popularity, you’ll always be popular. As Gilberto Gil put it: Brazil was, is, and will be in fashion…
and I hope, I’m sure, that the friendship between our two countries will grow ever
stronger.

חג עצמאות שמח, ברזיל
